I didn’t take this picture, and I don’t know who did. I just saw it and it reminded me of a story. Also, it’s beautiful.

While working on the boat, we recieved a radio call from the third mate that this exact situation was happening with guests out for a kayak. He used a the phrase “I’m fairly alarmed here” As beautiful as it looks, it’s absolutely terrifying, especially when the Orcas were uncharacteristically breaching. I once went kayaking in Glacier Bay and a harbor porpoise was tapping my kayak, and swimming around me, as if it wanted me to play with it. Those things are smaller than dolphins, and it could have easy tipped me over into 40 degree water. Imagine a whale jus moving a bit to close to your kayak, already, not the most stable water-crafts. Now imagine that Orca breaching. Imagine a dozen of them. Playing, and jumping and being wild. And they don’t really seem to notice you.

While there wasn’t this many, we had to send over Zodiacs to get the people out of the area.

About 25 minutes later, the Orca’s began hunting dahl’s porpoise. A few of us on Zodiac’s decided to persue. We were so close to them, and they were breaching all over the place. I remember feeling intense fear, but being endlessly amazed. They were too fast for the Zodiac’s and we were going quite far from the ship, but it was incredible none-the-less.

A random story I’m so thankful I get to tell.
